Billed as a slick fielder with a little bit of pop in his bat. Matsui rarely showed either during his time with the Mets and the most notable accomplishment has been hitting home runs in his first at-bat of both the 2004, 2005, and 2006 baseball seasons, becoming the first player in Major League history to begin his career with a home run in his first plate appearance for three straight seasons. After rebound his career during his stop with the Rockies, Matsui signed a free agent deal with the Astros, took over the 2nd base job which previous held by future Hall of Famers Craig Biggio and Jeff Kent for two decades.
