Dae-Sung "Mister" Koo
A teammate of Chan Ho Park back in college, Koo pitched for South Korea in the 1992 and 2000 Olympics. In the 2000 Olympics Koo pitched a complete game, striking out 11, to beat Japan 3 - 1, in the Bronze Medal game in Sydney. Koo was born right handed, but a childhood injury forced him to become left handed. In his first career Major League at-bat, Koo stood as far as he could away from the plate and took three straight strikes on purpose because the Mets were ahead 9 - 2 in the 8th inning, but in his next career at-bat, Koo recorded his first and only hit, a double off of Randy Johnson, and he was not quite done yet. A slow runner with little base running experience, Koo came around to score from second base when a bunt by Jose Reyes was misplayed by the Yankees, who failed to cover home after throwing Reyes out at first base. Koo hurt his shoulder on this play, but on this strange play, he was in the headlines in the world's baseball news. Pictured here is his 2004 BBM card, showing him pitching in Japan's opening day start against the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks back on March 27th, 2004.
