Kazuhisa "Kaz" Ishii
Streaky lefty who can either pitch a brilliant game or just not make it out of the 5th inning. Ishii made his Major League debut by striking out ten batters and allowing two hits and no runs in 5 2/3 innings against the Chicago Cubs, then went on a hot streak of winning during his next five starts and was named NL Rookie of the Month for April, 2002. Already a wildly inconsistent, he become more erratic after suffering a concussion from a line drive toward the end of 2002 so the Dodgers end up trading Ishii to the Mets for a backup catcher (Jason Phillips) during 2005 Spring Training after trying to solve his mechanics problem many times. Ishii went back to play in Japan after another dreadful season in 2005. Pictured here is his card from the 2002 Fleer Tradition Update This Day in History card, remembering his great start as a rookie where he won his first six starts.
