"The Old Reflector"
"Wednesday Outcomes."
Byung-Hyun Kim pitched 5 effective innings but couldn't get
any run support. Rockies
lose the serie finale to Astros, 7 - 1.
Kaz Ishii struggled at home as he could not escape
through 4 innings
where Mets squander to the Phillies, 6 - 3. In Detroit, closer
Shingo Takatsu earns a rare win as the teams battled through
13 innings and Takatsu pick up the win by pitching 2 2/3 of
scoreless innings. White Sox prevailed the Tigers at Comerica, 4 - 3.
(6/29)

"One Man Show."
Ichiro hit a leadoff homer for the 15th time of his career, but it was the
only run Seattle could produce throughout the game. Ichiro also had 3 of
the 7 hits. Mariners defeated by their own divisional rival Athletics, 8 - 1.
(6/28)

"Funky Flash."
Chien-Ming Wang was impressive with another quality start,
but for the 2nd time
this season Tom "Flash" Gordon blown a
win for him. Hideki Matsui continue
to bash the baseball out of
the park but it was not enough in this game. In the
extra innings,
Brian Roberts hits a walk-off homer. Yankees bow to Orioles, 5 - 4.
(6/28)

"Tornado against Toronto."
Hideo Nomo gave a quality performance to the team,
and Tampa Bay
scored just enough to win the game.
Devil Rays edge out the Blue Jays, 4 - 3.
(6/27)

"Rockin' Rockies."
Byung-Hyun Kim collected his 33rd Major League win with a lot of run
support from his teammates. Rockies vanquished the Royals, 12 - 4.
(6/24)

"Taguchi Touch em' All."
So Taguchi hit 2 homers and gave the crowd a
curtain call
after his 2nd dinger of the night. Cardinals
destroyed the
Pirates with 5 homers and won, 8 - 1.
(6/24)

"New York Notes."
On the road in Philadelphia, Kaz Ishii pitched solid to
pick up
just his 2nd win of the season, as the New York Mets
squeezed
by the Phillies, 4 - 3. Chien-Ming Wang stayed home
in the
Big Apple but was not effective against Tampa Bay, as
the
Yankees lose another one to the Devil Rays, this one by
the score 9 - 4. The two teams
will meet tomorrow as
The Subway Serie gets underway again in in the Bronx.
(6/23)

"Blasted."
Hideo Nomo and Chan Ho Park wish the game could be
over soon enough.
Both pitchers couldn't make through
5 innings and the Yankees' offense basically
ate up Tampa's
bullpen toward the end. Hideki Matsui continued his
power streak
as he hit his 9th homer of the season to the
black seats in the
stadium, the 19th player to do so in almost
30 years since
the remodeling of Yankee Stadium to seal up
Yankees' 20 - 11 win
over the Devil Rays, Matsui finished
with 2 RBIs and 4 runs
scored. Park lost just for the 2nd time
this season and this start was the worst one
of his career, as
he only lasted an inning during Rangers' 8 - 6 defeat by Angels.
(6/21)

"New Week, Same Result."
Hideki Matsui was named to the AL player of the week
last week and he began the new week with a bang.
Godzilla's 3 run shot was his 8th homer of the season,
however Yankees couldn't solve the Devil Rays, 5 - 4.
(6/20)

"New Home, Wrong Result."
Tomo Ohka made his Miller Park debut and it did not go as well
as the fan has hoped. Brewers lose to division foe Cubs, 5 - 4.
(6/20)

"Home Sweet Home."
Chien-Ming Wang bounced back from his worst outing
in St. Louis a week ago, with his best outing for
the season. Yankees squash the Cubs, 8 - 1.
(6/18)

"BK in B-More."
Byung-Hyun Kim was cruising through the first 3 innings
but look totally a different pitcher in the 4th and couldn't
make it through. Rockies lose to the Orioles, 7 - 2.
(6/18)

"Quality not Quantity, pt. 2."
Louisville (Reds' AAA) came in town and I went to see them,
like Scranton (Phillies' AAA), I didn't have too many cards on
the players. The game was wild toward the end as home team
manager Bill Evers got thrown out the game by an idiot umpire
after an very intense argument. I have never seem Mr. Evers
this upset before but I can not blame him as the call on fan
interference totally went against the us. Back to the autographs,
I did get the following players sign as least one card for me:
Chris Booker, Alex Fernandez, Steve Kelly, Jason Romano,
Joe Valentine, A.J. Zapp, prospects William Bergolla,
Edwin Encarnacion, and recently being send to the minor to find
his hitting back, Austin Kearns. Overall got 27 cards signed.
It is not that bad really I suppose, but I did spend 5 hours
getting them. No autograph next week, but stay tuned.
(6/17)

"Clash of the Rising Suns."
Kaz Ishii and Kaz Matsui visited Ichiro as New York come
in and square off with Seattle. Ichiro got the better end of the
game, as he had 3 hits and drove in 4 runs, where he hit a
3 run blast off Kaz Ishii. Kaz Matsui appeared in the 8th inning
as an defense replacement. Mariners shutout Mets, 5 - 0.
(6/17)

"Marvelous Matsui."
Hideki Matsui hits another homer in his current hot hitting streak.
This one lift Yankees to take the lead and hold off the Cubs, 9 - 6.
(6/17)

"Sweep Homer."
Hideki Matsui was hitting in a new spot batting 2nd in the lineup.
His homer bringing Derek Jeter and himself home in the 1st inning
gave New York a nice start for the game. The Big Unit went on
and pitch a good game as the Yankees sweep the Pirates, 6 - 1.
(6/16)

"Meikyukai Milestone."
Hideo Nomo's won for the 122nd time of his Major League
career, and his 200th lifetime. With the win, Nomo has reached
the milestone to become the 45th member (16th pitcher)
of Meikyukai. There are two Hall of Fame equivalents in
Japanese baseball. One is the Japanese baseball Hall of Fame;
the other is Meikyukai. Hall of Fame members are elected.
Membership in the Meikyukai is automatic after a position
player reaches 2,000 career hits, or a pitcher reaches 200
career wins. The totals are roughly the equivalent of 3,000 hits
or 300 wins in the MLB because the Japanese season is shorter.
Devil Rays won in this historical game over Brewers, 5 - 3.
(6/15)

"The Hitman."
A day after reaching 1,000th career hits. Ichiro led off
bottom of 1st inning with a homer to get Seattle's
offense started, Mariners beat Phillies, 5 - 1.
(6/15)

"Chan Ho Can't Complain."
Chan Ho Park began the day with a run support
average of 8.43 per start, the highest among qualifying
Major League pitchers, and the runs kept coming on a
steamy 97 degree night. Rangers' bat supported Park again,
beating the Braves 9 - 5 for his 7th win of the season.
(6/15)

"Tremendous Tuesday."
Tomo Ohka pitched his first career Major League shutout
in his debut with the new team, Brewers shutout
Devil Rays, 4 - 0. In Seattle, Ichiro reached his 1,000th
Major League hits, and help the Mariners sink Phillies, 3 - 1.
Hideki Matsui ended his longest homer drought with
a solo blast and finish the game 2 for 3 and Yankees
vanquished the Pirates, 9 - 0. Hee Seop Choi continued
his power streak by connecting his 13th homer of
the season, but Dodgers fall to Royals, 3 - 2.
(6/14)

"Quality not Quantity."
Didn't have too many cards on Scranton (Phillies' AAA) but
I did obtained couple nice autographs. New additions are
veteran pitcher Terry Adams, and top prospects Ryan Howard,
Gavin Floyd. Louisville (Reds' AAA) is next this weekend.
(6/12)

"Spectacular Sunday."
Byung-Hyun Kim pitched great in the thin air of Denver, as the
Rockies defeated the Tigers, 7 - 3. Hee Seop Choi, who hit the
game winning homer two nights earlier, smacked 3 solo blasts
off starter Brad Radke to help the Dodgers get past the Twins, 4 - 3.
(6/12)

"Seo Sighting."
I met Jae Seo as the Norfolk Tides roll into town this weekend.
Many people don't know this but I've met Jae twice before
and he is one the nicest Asian player I've ever encountered with.
He remembered me and once again signed all the different cards
that I've on him, and that made my day. I hope the Mets can
realize that Jae is a quality Major League pitcher and can stop
wasting his time in the Minors, his last game in the Majors
was a 7 innings, one hit performance, but what can they do
when they've 7 starters with only 5 spots available. I also
obtained autographs from about 10 different players, but new
additions are Seth McClung, Jason Roach, Prentice Redman
and Howard Johnson. Scranton (Phillies AAA) is coming next.
(6/10)

"Bad Day to Pitch."
What a day...or should I say nightmare for Asian pitchers.
Shigetoshi Hasegawa suffered the defeat as Mariners lose one
to Nationals, 9 - 3, Sun Woo Kim did pitch well in his first start
of the season in this game but involved with a no decision.
Hideo Nomo again failed to collect his 200th professional win,
and Devil Rays let the Pirates get the win, 7 - 2. Kaz Ishii was
spectacular for 5 innings but couldn't get out of the 6th and the
Mets end up getting blown out by the Angels, 12 - 2. Over in
St. Louis, Chien-Ming Wang couldn't overcome the miscues
by Yankees' defense and Cardinals' hitter has his number, as the
Yankees lose the game to Cardinals 8 - 1. Hee Seop Choi and his
team did enjoy a W, as Choi hit 2 homers, including the
game winning off of the first pitch from Terry Mulholland in the
bottom of the 9th inning. Dodgers overcomes the Twins
in a rare game thanks to the Interleague style, 6 - 5.
(6/10)

"Hey Hey Hey, Good-Bye."
Tomo Ohka, who earlier this week shown up on manager
Frank Robinson by refusing to give him the baseball
when being replaced was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers.
(6/10)

Brewers acquire Ohka for Spivey

"Take Your Pick."
The 2005 Major League baseball draft has ended with
Justin Upton getting his named called first. I hope one day that
the baseball draft would be live like NFL, NBA, and the NHL.
A couple players who I watched this past year in college
at East Carolina were selected, with Pitcher Ricky Brooks tabbed
in the 3rd round (95th overall) by the White Sox (who also selected
him out of HS but he chose to attend ECU). Shortstop Billy Richardson
going to Padres in the 14th round (428th overall), Third Baseman
Mark Minicozzi taken in the 17th round (522nd) by the Giants,
and Brian Cavanaugh selected in the 21st round (638th) by the
Padres. Below is a picture of me and Ricky Brooks, who I had
a class with this past semester. He pitched an 1-hitter that night.
Good Luck to all the Pirates who were selected. Only the
strong survive. Good Luck on the road to the Major League.

(6/8)

"Mid-Summer Classic Poll."
Barely a month away, the 2005 All-Star game held in
Detroit will be played to determine the home field advantage
for the World Series between the teams of American or
National League. Vote now to see which side you feel will win.
(6/8)

"Outdueled."
Byung-Hyun Kim pitched brilliantly, but dropped the rare pitching duel at
Coors Field against Jose Contreras. Rockies bow to the White Sox, 2 - 1.
(6/7)

"Numero Uno."
Shigetoshi Hasegawa picked up his 1st win of the season in
Mariners' 4 - 3 win over the Marlins during an interleague game.
(6/7)

"Wrong Side of Act."
Kaz Ishii had a fine day at the plate, rapping
two hits including an RBI single. But the hurler
gave up 6 runs, too much for the Mets to overcome
despite a 9th inning rally that saw them bring the
tying run to plate. Mets bow to the Giants, 6 - 3.
(6/5)

"Keep the Broom."
Tadahito Iguchi had 3 hits including a homer in the
7th inning to tie the game but Cleveland wins it in
extra innings. White Sox couldn't sweep the Indians, 6 - 4.
(6/5)

"Sunny Night."
Sun Woo Kim came in the game to relieve and picked up
his first victory of the season in a bizarre game where
his teammates ran over an umpire and showed up to
skipper Frank Robinson. Nationals beat Marlins, 7 - 3.
(6/4)

"Mileston Win."
Chan Ho Park can vouch for the notion that significant
milestones aren't easily achieved. Park huffed and puffed
in the sticky Kansas City heat, laboring through five
tedious innings. But in the end, he got what he wanted.
Park was the winning pitcher as the Rangers outscored
the Royals 14 - 9, making him the first Korean native in
Major League history to reach the 100 victory milestone.
(6/4)

"The Ageless Wonder."
Pat Borders, the MVP of the 1992 World Series has made his
way back to the Major League again. After injuries to
Dan Wilson/Wiki Gonzalez, and the poor performance of starter
Miguel Olivo, the Mariners obtained Borders from the Brewers and
manager Mike Hargrove quickly announced Borders will be the
starting catcher because he can get the most out of the pitchers
he's catching thanks to his experiences behind the plate.
I knew Pat from 2000-2001 when he played for the Durham Bulls,
and he signed numerous autographs for me and I had a chance
to meet his family when they came visit him from Florida in '01. Pat
is the type of player that baseball is true lacking these days. Go Pat!
(6/3)

Borders makes his mark
Borders aging well
Borders an ally for pitchers
Boost from Borders
Sele, Borders spark Mariners
Piniella has fond memories

"Godzilla Roar (again)."
Hideki Matsui, who is in the longest home run drought
of his MLB career finally knock another one over the
wall to end the 180 AB without a homer streak.
However, Yankees lost the game 5 - 3 to the Royals as
Buddy Bell won in his debut as the manager for Kansas City.
(5/31)

"Same Teams, Different Place, Different Result."
Just five days ago, Hideo Nomo gave his best performance
of the season by collecting his 199th pro career win. On his
quest to 200 however, he was hit hard and lasted only
four innings to the team that he dominated twice earlier this
season so far. Devil Rays got vanquished by the Athletics, 10 - 1.
(5/31)

"Memorial Win."
Tomo Ohka kept the Braves off balance all afternoon,
allowing one run on three hits in seven innings. Nationals
get by the Braves 3 - 2. It was the first baseball game
in D.C. on memorial day in almost four decades.
(5/30)

"Winning Tradition."
Chan Ho Park started for the Rangers and picked up the
8th consecutive win for a Texas starter, the most
consecutive victories for Texas starters in club history.
Rangers down the White Sox by the score of 12 - 4.
(5/30)

"Sunday Night Baseball."
I went to tonight's game between Pawtucket Pawsox and
Durham Bulls. Pawtucket won 8 - 0, so after the game the
Bulls' players weren't too happy about signing, but I did
get Eric Munson. I work on Pawtucket pre-game and obtained
autographs from about 14 different players, most notable were
Roberto Petagine, who returned to the US after six stellar
season in Japan, and Japanese reliever Denney Tomori.
(5/29)

"Ishii's Sushi."
Kaz Ishii allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings as the Mets
beat the Marlins, 6 - 1. It was Ishii's first win with his
new team and the Mets' first victory over Dontrelle Willis.
(5/28)

"BK Bash."
Byung-Hyun Kim gave up five runs, all via home runs, in the
Rockies' 5 - 1 loss to the Cubs in front of 39,368 at Wrigley Field.
(5/28)

"Tornado Strikes Tampa."
Hideo Nomo cruises 7+ innings of work with his
best stuff out there on the mound this season.
Devil Rays defeats a scrappy bunch of Athletics, 2 - 1.
(5/26)

"Tiger Beat Tigers."
Chien-Ming Wang, who a former college teammate
gave him the nickname Tiger continued to impress
in his rookie season, picking up his third consecutive
victory with 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball despite being
skipped in his last start. Yankees won the game 4 - 2
with Chien-Ming Wang's good outing against the Tigers.
(5/25)

"Snake Bitten."
Akinori Otsuka came in the 8th inning with a three runs
lead but he could not get any batters out and end up giving
up four runs. Padres fallen to the Diamondbacks, 12 - 11.
(5/25)

"More Autographs."
Indy Indians wraps up its 4 games serie here in Durham and
I was able to get the following players' autographs:
Bobby Bradley, Kirk Bullinger, Kevin Cash, Mark Corey, and
C.J. Nitkowski. C.J. has his own website and you can get his
signature by writing to him, check out CJ Baseball. Bullinger
was on the USA team that traveled to Taiwan for the
World Cup baseball in 2001, when I asked for his experience,
he said it was something he would never trade anything for.
(5/24)

* Update *
Like Enrique Wilson I met few days ago, C.J. Nitkowski also took the
unusual route to go back to the Majors by signing with the Nationals.
(5/26)

"Wild Wild Ishii."
Kaz Ishii is still searching for his first win as a New York Mets
after getting pounded during tonight's outing. Even though the
Mets out-hit the Braves 11 to 8, they were outscored, 8 - 6.
(5/23)

"Sunday Scoops."
Tomo Ohka, making his first start since being demoted
to the bullpen few weeks ago, responded with a good outing
in Nationals' 9 - 2 win over the Blue Jays. In Texas,
Chan Ho Park overcome the hot temperature as he
battled leg cramps with a gusty performance by pitching
seven shutout innings to help the Rangers conquered
the Astros, 2 - 0. Over in the Windy City, Tadahito Iguchi
hit a solo blast, but the White Sox fall short to the Cubs, 4 -3.
(5/22)

"Amazing Mets."
Dae-Sung Koo put a charge into the Shea crowd with
his double, then scored on a heads-up play to
put the Mets up, 3-0. On the mound, he also pitched a
dandy relief Mets won the 2nd game of the Subway Series
from the Yankees, 7 - 1. Both Matsuies had a hit each.
(5/21)

"Interleague Battle."
Hideo Nomo remained winless in his career against Florida.
Marlins victorious over him and the Devil Rays, 7 - 6. In
New York, Subway series gets underway and Hideki and the
Yankees edged out Kaz and his Mets in game one, 5 - 2.
Over at the bay area. Keiichi Yabu pitched two innings of relief to
pick up his 4th win of the year. Athletics dwarfed the Giants, 8 - 4.
 (5/20)

"Perfecto!"
This is definitely worth a mention. Katie Brownell, a shy
11-year-old girl of few words from New York being the
only girl on the team threw a perfect game by struck out
every batter she faced and none of the count reached
three-ball. Amazing accomplishment even if it was being
done by a guy. Apparently she can hit tremendously also
as she batted .714 through the team's first three games.

(5/19)
League of her own

"A Picture is Worth a 1,000 Words."
I found some time and finally scanned another batch of
autographs that I got. There are 106 new scans of autographs
available on Autograph Land section. I am probably not
going to scan any new ones until the end of the 2005 season.
(5/19)

"A Night to Remember."
It was the annual Asian night at Shea Stadium and
Kaz Ishii pitched very well to keep the Mets in the game.
His Japanese teammate Kaz Matsui, who often received
boos from impatient Mets fans because of his horrible
defensive plays and have manager Willie Randolph
drop him into the 8th in the batting order turn the boos
into cheers by hitting the go-ahead 2 run homer in the
7th inning. Mets' Korean reliever Dae-Sung Koo also appeared
in the ball game. Mets won the game over the Reds, 2 - 1.
(5/17)

"Autographmania."
Lack of updates in the autograph section but I did see
three teams so far this season. I've updated all the new
autographs I got this season and I would say Enrique Wilson
is the nicest out of the bunch. I asked him if it's tough to play
for the boss, he replied to me "Yeah it can be...he likes
to win you know?", I said, well everyone wants to win.
(5/16)

* Update *
Who would've thought a day later, Enrique Wilson would be
signed by the Chicago Cubs and playing in the Major again?
(5/17)

"Monday's Musings."
Tadahito Iguchi hit his 3rd homer of the season but the
White Sox still lost the game to the Rangers, 7 - 6, Chan Ho Park
was ineffective in this game for Texas but Shingo Takatsu
pitched one shutout inning in relief for Chicago. Over in Oakland,
Keiichi Yabu gave up the game tying two run double to
David Ortiz but he bounced back nicely and pitched a
scoreless inning after that and was credited the win in Athletics'
6 - 4 victory over the Red Sox. Staying in the west,
Chien-Ming Wang and the Yankees continues their winning streak by
defeating the Mariners, 6 - 4. Shigetoshi Hasegawa suffered the
loss in the same game, and both Ichiro and Matsui both had a hit.
(5/16)

"Mile High Victory."
Byung-Hyun Kim matched John Smoltz pitch by pitch during
his first start of the season, but Chin-Hui Tsao could not save
the game for him and Tsao ended up getting the win as Colorado
escaped in bottom of the 9th. Rockies pasted the Braves, 6 - 5.
(5/11)

"Slug Fest."
Ichiro and Hideki Matsui joined the rest of their teammates
as both team's offense ignited all game long. Ichiro finished
3 for 5 with a homer and Matsui collected 2 hits and 3 RBIs
in the game. Yankees outscored the Mariners, 13 - 9.
(5/11)

"Come Back Kid."
Hee Seop Choi fueled Dodgers' come back with his 3 runs homer.
Dodgers come from behind and hold off the Cardinals, 9 - 8.
(5/10)

"Cantu Can Do."
It was mother's day back home in Mexico, and Jorge Cantu
delivered a walk-off homer off Japanese closer Shingo Takatsu.
White Sox let this one slipped to the Devil Rays, 7 - 6.
(5/10)

"W for Wang."
Chien-Ming Wang, making his 3rd Major League start
earned his 1st, and hopefully many wins with a
solid outing. Shigetoshi Hasegawa pitched a shutout inning
and the two hitters ( Ichiro and Hideki Matsui ) combined
for 1 for 10 at the plate. Yankees wins again as they
are on a roll lately, they conquered the Mariners, 7 - 4.
(5/10)

"Perfect Save."
Chin-Hui Tsao notched his third save in as many attempts this season,
retiring the hitters in order in the 9th with a strikeout of Raul Mondesi
as the final exclamation point. Rockies topped the Braves, 7 - 6.
(5/9)

"Kaz One Out."
Kaz Matsui looks to break out his hitting slump by
hitting his 2nd homer of the season through the rain
in Chicago. Mets edges out the Cubs, 7 - 4.
(5/9)

"Make Lilly Silly."
Tadahito Iguichi's 2nd homer of the season knocked
Toronto's starter Ted Lilly out of the game. White Sox
scored early and defeated Blue Jays, 10 - 7.
(5/7)

"Hot Spicy Choi."
Hee Seop Choi, who has been on a tear lately after
a horrible first two weeks of season at the plate
continue his hot bat by belting two homers.
He finished the game 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs and 3 run
scored. Dodgers smacked the Reds around, 13 - 6.
(5/6)

"No W for Wang."
Chien-Ming Wang, seeking his first career win during his
second start, but he was not as effective as he is during his
Major League debut. The Yankees fallen to the Devil Rays, 6 - 2.
(5/5)

"Best Beats the Worst."
The best team in AL beat the worst team in the NL, but
it was not as easy. Shingo Takatsu collected his 8th
save in White Sox's 2 - 1 victory over the Royals.
(5/5)

"Seo Not Fair."
Jae Seo pitched seven shutout innings, thanks to Cliff Floyd
who made a huge leap to bring back a potential 2 run homer.
But with the performance Seo was option down to AAA as the
Mets needed to make a room for Kris Benson. Well, life is not fair,
and baseball falls under the category, Mets beat Phillies, 3 - 2.
(5/4)

"A Game to Remember."
Tadahito Iguchi had a game he'll remember for the ages,
he went 4 for 4 with his first career Major League homer in the
White Sox's 5 - 4 victory over the Royals. Shingo Takatsu notched
his 7th save of the season by working a perfect 9th inning.
(5/3)

"Call 911!"
I'm sure most fans have saw it, but in case you didn't, Ichiro,
four time Gold Glove winner climbed up the wall out in the right field
of Safeco to rob a Garrett Anderson's homer in the 7th inning in a
losing effort. As Angels shutout the Mariners, 5 - 0. The sensational
play made by Ichiro was the #1 webgem on Baseball Tonight.

(5/2)

"Tag The Power."
So Taguchi started the big night of offense from both teams by hitting
a solo blast in the 3rd inning. Cardinals escaped the Reds, 10 - 9.
(5/2)

"New Poll."
Like I planned, I created a new question for this month's poll, so if you
want to exercise your right and participate, please do so. "I don't believe"
Brian Roberts is on steroids, but how he become a slugger at 5'9"
180 lbs, not to mention almost had more homers in the first month
of the season this year than the past two seasons combined.
(5/1)

What is the biggest surprise during the first month of the season?
