"The Old Reflector"
"2007 Season Finale."
Akinori Iwamura played 2nd base for the 1st time in five years.
The move from his usual hot corner spot to 2nd is to prepare
for a potential fulltime shift in case 3rd basemen prospect
Evan Longoria make the squad out of Spring Training next season.

Hideki Matsui left Baltimore early and returned to New York
to have his troublesome right knee drained in preparation for
the postseason. Joe Torre said the procedure is not expected to
change Matsui's status for the ALDS against Cleveland Indians,
however Matsui will serve as the DH throughout the playoffs.

"Crown Clinched."
Daisuke Matsuzaka's last game before the postseason
was a memorable one, he helped the Boston Red Sox
clinched the AL East for the 1st time since 1995 by
going eight innings, allowed six hits and two runs while
striking out eight in the 5 - 2 win over the Minnesota Twins.
With the win, Matsuzaka closed out his 1st Major League
season with a record of 15 - 12 and an ERA of 4.40.

"Baek is Back."
Cha Seung Baek made his 1st start since June 16th
and won for the 1st time since May 31st. Baek pitched
six innings, allowed one run on seven hits for the
Seattle Mariners' 4 - 2 win over Cleveland Indians.
Since Baek's return from the DL, he has posted an ERA
of 1.00, working nine innings, three in relief, allowing
one run on nine hits while walking only two batters.

"Dodger Duos."
Unlike the much heralded Matt Kemp, James Loney, or Russell Martin,
Los Angeles Dodgers' B-List prospects have opened some eyes with
their accomplishments this past season. Both Chin-Lung Hu and
Delwyn Young have perform well above expectations in 2007.

"Bullpen Session."
Takashi Saito is a finalist for DHL Delivery Man of the Year Award,
Saito heading into the final week of the season tied for 5th in
the Major League with 39 saves while boasting a 1.47 ERA.

Hideki Okajima might be pitching in a game soon

Minor League Transactions (September 15-21)

"2007 Far East Minor Leaguers Review."
Check the 2007 Far East Heroes for individual statistics
here are my two cents on how each players fared in 2007.
Major Leaguers Review coming sometime next week.

South Korean
Jae-Hyun Jang - Signed, but DNP.

Sung-Ki Jung - Pitched very well as a 27-year-old in A/AA
after missing the last 2+ seasons with military duty in Korea.

Young-Il Jung - Pitched 3 games before being shutdown,
bad debut for someone who received $1 million signing bonus.

Simon Lee - Dominated against younger competition in
Rookie ball in his 1st pro season as a 24-year-old.

Yoon-Hee Nam - Southpaw who had a great 1st year,
giving up only 1 homer and 4 walks in 32 1/3 innings.

Hyuk Son - Was on DL the entire year, I hope to see what he
have left after retired in Korea a few years ago next season.

Japanese
Jang Ji Cho - Coming back after missing all of 2006,
Cho put up shaky numbers with 4 different levels.

Takumi Hamaoka - Repeat Rookie ball in 2007 and put up
worse numbers than 2006, candidate of being released.

Yusaku Iriki - Suspended for steroid use and look like just
another ordinary AA pitcher. Pitching in Japan next year?

Ryohei Shimabukuro - Had a tough 1st pro season at the plate
where he couldn't hit his own weight, but relatively young age wise.

Keisuke Ueno - Good season, held his own in Short-Season ball.

Taiwanese
Hung-Wen Chen - Had a delayed debut, 2 bad outings in
Rookie ball, 2 so-so outings in Short-Season ball.

Yung-Chi Chen - Played just 5 games before season ending injury.

Chi-Hung Cheng - Coming back from surgery, like Chen, had
bad outings in Rookie ball, and so-so outings in Short-Season ball.

Chih-Hsien Chiang - Below average stats with a terrible OBP.

Tzu-Kai Chiu - Lefty starter showed good control
in his 1st pro season in the Rookie level.

Chih-Hsiang Huang - Another year hitting in the Mendoza line.

Chen-En Hung - Unknown injury, DNP.

Po-Hsuang Keng - Average stats, trouble against lefty hitters.

Sheng-An Kuo - Like Keng, OK Stats with trouble against lefties.

Che-Hsuan Lin - Signed for his defense, hitting is a
little behind and struck out a bit too much.

Po-Yu Lin - Better stats as a starter, shutdown lefty hitters.

Wang-Wei Lin - Overmatched at the plate in his 1st pro season.

Wang-Yi Lin - Surgery, DNP.

Yen-Feng Lin - Other than a little bit of control issue, had
an outstanding year and pitched well against lefties.

Ching-Lung Lo - Another year with ERA over 5 as a starter.

Kuo-Hu Lo - Swiped 32 bases, hit well on
the road and not so much at home.

Sung-Wei Tseng - Pitched well at home and terrible
on the road during his 1st pro season.

Chih-Hsiang Wen - Like Shimabukuro, couldn't hit his own
weight, unlike Shimabukuro, he's old and not a prospect.

Chao-Kuan Wu - Didn't play much and quit the team
after spending most of the time as the bullpen catcher.

"Hot Corner Topic."
Every games Akinori Iwamura has played in this year
has been at 3rd base, but with the presence of prospect
Evan Longoria, Iwamura might become an utility infielder
next season with some appearance at centerfield as well.

rest of Tampa Bay Devil Rays' rookie players' hazing

"5 Minutes of Fame."
More than likely half of people would agree with me, and another
half disagree with me on my opinion on this issue. As many people
know by now, Shelley Duncan signed an autograph to a 10-year-old
Red Sox fan named Griffin Whitman during one of last weekend's
game. Duncan also wrote Red Sox Suck! above his signature,
which draws some criticism from the Whitman family. As a Red Sox
fan and an avid autograph collector myself, I do not believe what
Duncan has done was anything wrong. Here are some of my views.

1. Too many kids are just rude and disrespectful while asking for
an autograph. In many games I have attended myself, I saw
kids, sometime in packs would just keep yelling at the players
while they are taking BP, stretching, or fielding prior to the games
to get an autograph from, players WILL NOT come over if you yell
at them, not to mention when they see you pushing and shoving
one another just so you can get them sign something for your.

2. What was this kid (or his parents) thinking? Why would you
want to deck out in Red Sox gear and ask a Yankee player
for an autograph? It is like asking Jim Tressel to sign while wearing
Michigan Navy and Gold all over yourself before the football game.

3. When have the word Suck become that bad of a word of choice?
Does anyone honestly think while watching the game at Fenway,
Griffin's precious ears would not hear any if not all Red Sox fans
chanting Yankees Sucks, A-Rod Sucks, Jeter Sucks, etc.?

I hope the Whitmans enjoyed their 5 minutes of fame,
but I think in the end, Shelley Duncan probably did it
because he thought Griffin was this kid from a few years back.

"Teletubbies Pirate."
As the regular season coming to an end in just two weeks,
Boston Red Sox rookie players found themselves dress up
in costumes as they flew to Toronto for their series against
the Blue Jays. Both Daisuke Matsuzaka and Hideki Okajima
are veterans in the NPB, but still they are considered just
rookie in the MLB. Matsuzaka dressed up as Dipsy from
the Teletubbies, while Okajima was a female pirate.
Anyways, pictures are worth a thousand words, last year,
Yankees' Chien-Ming Wang dressed up as a cheerleader.

"Ying-Yang Twins."
Funny list compiled by ESPN, both Kei Igawa and Hideki Irabu
found themselves on the list of 100 players you love to hate.

23. Hideki Irabu, New York Yankees:
When your team's owner calls you a fat toad in
the media, things probably aren't going so well.

24. Kei Igawa, New York Yankees:
Yes, he's another Japanese pitcher who was horribly
overpaid by the Yankees, then failed miserably on
the mound. On the plus side, he's pretty slim.

"3rd Time a Charm."
Byung-Hyun Kim is pitching well for the Florida Marlins
after struggling while with both the Arizona and Colorado.
(9/16)

Kim settling in with Florida

"Boston Tea Party."
Chien-Ming Wang looked strong early in the game but was out
of the game before the end of the 6th inning. The game was
close but when Jacoby Ellsbury entered the game for the injured
Kevin Youkilis, the momentum totally changed and everything
fell apart for Wang and the Bronx Bombers. Boston Red Sox
pulverized New York Yankees 10 - 1, and with the loss, Wang's
chance of winning the AL Cy Young took a huge hit since both
Josh Beckett and C.C. Sabathia impressed on their latest outings.
Wang went 5 2/3 innings giving up 5 runs on 9 hits and 3 walks
to go with 3 strikeouts. Hideki Matsui went hitless with a walk.
(9/15)
|
Wang outdone by Beckett in Boston

"Strong Saito."
Takashi Saito has converted 16 consecutive save opportunities
since 7/13, and he has not allowed a run since 8/10. To manager
Grady Little, Saito's recent pitching performance may be the best
he has seen since the Saito took over as the closer last season.
(9/15)
|
Saito is closing strong

"Happy Birthday!"
It is official, Daisuke Matsuzaka will not make his next
scheduled start to get some extra rest. Matsuzaka's ERA
this season with six or more days of rest is only 2.08.
(9/17)
Matsuzaka pushed back

Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched a no-decision while showed a little
bit of inconsistency of finding the strike zone. I think it is time
for Matsuzaka to skip a start (replace with Clay Buchholz) so
Matsuzaka would be fresh and be ready for the post season.
Hideki Okajima got lit up as he allowed 4 runs on 3 hits with
Giambi and Cano went back-to-back homer and a walk in just
1/3 innings. Hideki Matsui went 1-for-4 with an RBI during the
New York Yankees' 8 - 7 come from behind win over Boston Red Sox.
Showdown tomorrow between Josh Beckett/Chien-Ming Wang.

Cy Young battle, Sox-Yanks on FOX

Daisuke Matsuzaka celebrated his birthday with the Japanese
media that have been following him around all season. Matsuzaka
turned 27 and his birthday wish was hoping to have a better
birthday next year, an obvious attempt at humor by Matsuzaka,
who knows better than anyone that he's struggled in his last few
outings. Matsuzaka hope to improve in his start tomorrow as
Boston Red Sox take on the New York Yankees for the last time
this season. Game 2 of the series will feature the top two Cy Young
candidates Josh Beckett and Chien-Ming Wang on FOX at 3:30 ET.

Dice-K seeks quick turnaround
Once more with feeling

"Cy Wang?"
The AL Cy Young battle comes down between the two historical
rival's ace this season. Both Josh Beckett of Boston Red Sox,
and Chien-Ming Wang of New York Yankees are the top favorite of
winning the prestigious pitching award. However, I would not count
out Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim's Kelvim Escobar, as he is one
of the most underrated pitcher in the game right now, and remember
last year's AL MVP was won by Justin Morneau, who was really
honestly only the 3rd best player on the Minnesota Twins last year.
(9/11)
|
AL Cy could boil down to longtime rivals

"Good & Bad."
Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched his worst game this season.
Matsuzaka, often rely too much on his fastball was blown
apart in his 2 2/3 innings of work, where he allowed 8 runs
on 6 hits (2 homers) and 3 walks. Baltimore Orioles jump
all over the Boston Red Sox by the score of 11 - 5.

Chien-Ming Wang pitched 7 solid innings, gave up
only 3 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks. New York Yankees
double up the score on the Kansas City Royals 6 - 3.

"Okie Dokey?"
Hideki Okajima has pitched a career-high 61 appearances
so far this season. The 65 1/3 innings represent his highest
total since 2000. After posted an ERA of 0.83 over 39 outings
before the break, Okajima has a 3.68 ERA in 22 appearances
during the 2nd half of the season so far, feeling fatigue as he
enters the final stages of his first Major League season.

"Wild Card Watch."
Chien-Ming Wang hurl 7+ strong innings and the New York Yankees
took advantage of Seattle Mariners' bullpen by exploding for 7 runs in
the 7th inning to win the game 12 - 3. Both Ichiro and Kenji Johjima

"Interesting Iwamura Bat."
Akinori Iwamura had his bat confiscated in the game against
the New York Yankees. Joe Torre contends that no manufacturer
makes a bat sawed off at the end, and he wanted to determine
whether it was a legal bat or an illegal bat. Iwamura's interesting
bat was sent to the Commissioner's Office for inspection.

"Series Sweep."
Chien-Ming Wang won his 16th game by allowing only 1 hit in
7 innings of work, but what irked him and pitching Ron Guidry
was the 4 walks he issued this afternoon. Wang's dominance gave
New York Yankees a 5 - 0 shutout over Boston Red Sox, which
pulls them only 5 games back in the AL East after the sweep.

Tadahito Iguchi scored the winning run in Philadelphia Phillies'
wild come from behind 11 - 10 win over the New York Mets, which
pulls them only 2 games back in the NL East after the sweep.

"Super Saturday."
Kaz Matsui's speed gave the Colorado Rockies 6 - 5 win over
Washington Nationals. Rockies scored 5 runs on bottom of the 9th

After winning AL player of the month in July, Hideki Matsui's
bat continues to be hot. Matsui hit safely in 43 of his last 47
games, hitting .358 with 15 homers, 23 RBIs and 48 runs scored.

Byung-Hyun Kim signed with the Florida Marlins, the team
who waived him less than a month ago. Kim made only two
terrible starts for the Arizona Diamondbacks before being
designated for assignment, and has not pitched in two weeks.

Ichiro played every game so far this year for the Seattle Mariners,
with the incredible summer heat, manager John McLaren gave
him a day off, but is available to be a pinch-hitter/runner if needed.

Chien-Ming Wang won his 15th game of the season, he pitched
8 solid innings, giving up only 2 runs on 5 hits to go with 2 walks
and 6 strikeouts. After the previous game which took more than 8
hours to complete (4 hours rain delay), New York Yankees showed
no sign of fatigue in their 7 - 2 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

"DFA'd."
Masumi Kuwata's Major League journey has come to a halt.
Kuwata was designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates
after giving up 19 runs the last 10 1/3 innings pitched, and he will
have to accept an invitation to rejoin AAA-Indianapolis, assuming
that he passes through waivers unclaimed. It is also unlikely Kuwata
will return to Pirates even when the roster expands in two weeks.

Byung-Hyun Kim also suffered the same fate, after recently return
to the team that he started his career with, Kim lasted only two
starts, which he allowed 7 earned runs on 11 hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Chien-Ming Wang notched his 13th win of the season,
